Mention Star Trek and most people immediately think of the Enterprise. At the heart of Star Trek series and movies are the space ships. Star Trek Online is no different. Each player, no matter their rank, is given command of their very own Federation or Klingon ship. This space craft is customizable, and it is your gateway to the entire game. There are about 41 known ships to choose from, and you may pick your own nacelles, decals and stanchions within a ship’s class. Which type of ship you choose influences certain aspects of the game, such as what bridge slots are available for certain types of crew members. Different ships are available to players depending on their character’s rank, and ships serve different purposes, such as Cruisers, Science Vessels, Escort Vessels, and Exploration Vessels. As more advanced ships become available, a player’s older ships are stored in a stable of sorts rather than being discarded.
At the launch of the game only a few areas of your ship will be accessible to you. The most obvious spot available is the bridge, but there are rumors of other areas like Sickbay. More areas of the ships may become available after the game has launched, but they will mostly be for social interaction only and not serve any specific game function.
The following are the known Federation ships that players can captain in Star Trek Online, divided up by which character level the ships are available:

And the two known ships available to the Klingon Empire are the Vo’Quv Class and Raptor Class.
Helping you in your adventures across the galaxy will be a bridge crew made up of Officers that basically serve as advanced pets. They fill the specific slots (such as Science and Engineering) in your ship, and can be controlled in Away Team combat. Your officers can be any race that you choose, and your ship will determine how many of each specialization you need or can have. In addition to choosing the race of bridge officers, players can also choose gender, appearance, and names for these crew members. These officers cannot be permanently killed. Player ships will also be populated with “redshirt” characters, who fulfill the general tasks on the space ship and can be killed in combat. They need to be replenished at space docks periodically. Lastly, holographic projections can also serve as regular crew members, although with some restrictions.
Star Trek Online gives players a huge number of ships to choose from with a lot of customability, so a player can create any combination of crews and ships that they desire. Want to role-play an all Vulcan science vessel? Cryptic’s made almost anything you want to do possible.
